Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has confirmed that he wants to leave the club after turning down a reported £100,000 a week contract. On Tuesday afternoon Liverpool FC issued this statement:
"The club has made it crystal clear we want to keep Steven at Anfield. Sadly, he has told us that he will not accept our offer of an improved and extended contract because he wants to leave."
On Monday the club turned down a £32million bid for the European Cup winning skipper from Premiership Champions Chelsea, with Real Madrid also said to be in the race for his signature.
While the main news surrounding Liverpool on Monday was of Steven Gerrard and his - according to the press - impending departure, midielder Bolo Zenden was unveiled as the first signing of the summer. And deals for three more players were confirmed by manager Rafa Benitez.
The three other signings are no suprise though, goalkeeper Jose Reina, winger Mark Gonzales and young full back Antonio Barragan have been heavily linked with a move to Anfield for weeks and now are confirmed as complete.
Benitez told the press "We have today introduced Bolo Zenden as a Liverpool player but we have also signed Jose Reina, the best goalkeeper in Spain, Mark Gonzales, the best player in Chile and Antonio Barragan." He also told how more two or three more signings will arrive next week.
With the current captain of the European Champions turning his back on his hometown club, it is now the turn of a true, loyal and passionate Liverpool player to take over the captains armband.
One man may question the judgement of a manager who won the Champions League in his first season at the club against all odds - and claim he wants success yet has won every trophy available bar one with the club.
The other has just won the supporters player of the year award and speaks passionately about the team and fans he represents on the pitch, a true leader on the pitch and 110% committed in every game.
Liverpool fans can look forward to a season under the leadership of Rafa Benitez and Jamie Carragher.
